It is mandatory to link AADHAR with PAN Number for filing returns from 01 July 2017. From this financial year tax payers can file their Income Tax returns only if their PAN Number is linked with their AADHAR Number. If the AADHAR number is not updated in the Income Tax Department Database linking with PAN, IT returns are not valid. As a part of Digital India initiative this will help to curb unlawful financial activities with PAN Number. This initiative also helps to eliminate duplicate PAN Numbers.
How To Link AADHAR with PAN Number (VIDEO)
Linking AADHAR with PAN Number is straight forward in most cases. But often people face problem in linking both of them. The problem in linking pan number with aadhar number is due to mismatch of either name, gender or date of birth in Income tax and UIDAI (AADHAR) databases. It is possible that name does not match due to transposition of last and first names, incorrect spaces between part of names etc., Also rarely, there may be mismatch in Gender and Date Of Birth due to wrong entry or mistakes in filling the forms.
To Link both aadhar and pan number go to income tax india efiling website login page. After login got to PROFILE SETTINGS => LINK AADHAR. If your aadhar is already linked with pan you will get the message like in the image below.
How to Correct AADHAR Data To Match With PAN Data
If your aadhar is not yet linked to pan number then, a window opens to enter your aadhar number. If both AADHAR and PAN data matches, then a success confirmation message is displayed as above. If there is any mismatch in data in both databases, then you need to update aadhar data.
To update mismatched data (It can be name, Date of Birth or Gender) in AADHAR database go to AADHAR Data update portal and click on Update Aadhaar Detail (Online) . Enter Your 12 digit AADHAR Number and enter One Time Password (OTP) received on your mobile. You will be given option to select which data need to be edited. For this purpose select Name, Gender and DOB. Enter correct details as per PAN Number. Keep scan copies of PAN which should be below 2 MB preferably in JPG Format. Make sure that the file name of image does not contain special characters.
After updating scan copies select BPO who process this request. Select the one which processes it least time. Usually it takes around 2 days for the changes to get updated.
After the changes are done in UIDAI database, you can again login to income tax india e-filing website and go to profile tab and click link aadhar. Enter 12 digit aadhar number. Once this is done, a success message is displayed and the same can be verified by going to link aadhar link.
Many sources are reporting that PAN number without AADHAR linking will be invalid after 31 Dec 2017.
